Ai Weiwei
Considered one of today’s most influential artists, Ai Weiwei ceaselessly observes and questions our societies, and in particular social conditions in China. He was arrested and kept in a secret location for some months in 2011 by the Chinese government and has since been banned from leaving the country. His work takes the form of sculpture, photography, architecture, as well as tweets on Twitter and blogs. He exhibited at the 48th Venice Biennial and at the Documenta XII in Kassel, as well as at the Unilever Series exhibition at the Tate Modern with his piece Sunflower Seeds. He was also the subject of an extensive retrospective show at the Jeu de Paume in Paris.
